And I had such hopes that I moved beyond the bickering over the finale and the fan reaction. I was wrong. Horribly wrong.

Questions from the Fandom June 2011 Edition
To the best of my knowledge, no. It recently started airing again in Australia on premium cable, but as for the United States--no. The best way to catch Xena nowadays is either buy the DVDs, stream them through Netflix (though, Lyre, Lyre Hearts on Fire and Antony and Cleopatra are not available because of music rights), purchase seasons from Amazon or iTunes streaming service. Xena was recently added to Hulu +. Hulu does have the aforementioned episodes available for streaming, and in some cases--they have the episode promos that lead episodes off.
Do you know where I can buy Xena merchandise?
Your best bet is try eBay. A word of caution, some sellers tend to "inflate" their prices because they're not serious about selling their collections. Shop around on eBay.
How to do I write to the actors?
I'm a bad Xenite in that I don't keep up on that. Try searching for individual actors on Google. Many of them have their own websites with ways to contact them (or at least someone working with them).
Are there plans to bring Spartacus onto regular TV?
I've not heard anything about syndication rights. They'd have to seriously clean up episodes and remove the sex and blood scenes. Netflix does stream the episodes and the first season is available on DVD.
What is your opinion on Spartacus?
Couldn't get into it. I tried, diligently to find something worthwhile and interesting in the series and it never happened. Some of it is that I'm not a person who gets a kick out of watching blood and sex. While it may accurately portray, in some respects, life in a Roman gladiator school--historically, there are problems with the content.
Why hasn't Renee worked more?
Some of it is personal choice, I believe. The rest of it is all on Hollywood's political structure (not political like Democrats and Republicans) of the casting world. It's who you know and your ability to sell yourself. Renee seems perfectly content working in the Indie scene.
Will there ever be a Xena movie?
Sure. Just not the one you may want. I suspect that within the next decade or decade and a half, Xena will come to the big screen. It'll be re-imagined with all new actors in the main roles. Which is sadly, as it should be. I realize that stings to hear. But I do believe that principle actors have moved on from their days on Xena.
How come Xena [I assume the person meant Lucy] doesn't do more action roles?
The person meant Lucy, I believe. At any rate, I think the question answers itself. If you still see Lucy as Xena, that's the reason WHY she hasn't taken on another Xena-esque role in the decade since Xena ended. Lucy, while she fondly looks back upon XWP, really doesn't want to go through her post XWP career playing like-minded roles. It's bad enough when Hollywood typecasts actors into the roles that put them on the map, it's worse with the fans do it as well. This is something casting people pick up on in Hollywood. Let Lucy be the judge of what roles she wants to play. And believe me, she's turned a lot of Xena-esque roles because she doesn't want to rehash Xena in some new setting.
What would you like to see in a movie?
New actors. Story---new story too. I'd rather keep the two properties separate.
Do you still write fan fiction? Tales of the Warrior was great!
This question finally prompted me to find my PDFs of the virtual series I did a few years ago. To answer the question, no. I no longer write fan fiction. I've been writing non-fiction stuff most recently. I'm currently researching for a historical fiction novel set in World War II that's loosely based on my family's involvement. Though, I wouldn't discount me not writing fan fiction altogether. I might end Tales of the Warrior with a movie. We'll see.
Do you read fan fiction?
No. I can't. I'd rather read something I created because it's based on my vision and not what another fan's vision is because the two points often don't see eye to eye. It's a polite way of saying, I can't stomach the majority of fan fiction without my intelligence or morals being insulted one way or the other. I'm sure people feel the same way about my writing as well. So it's all good. And most of the fan fiction is "smut" anyways. I like stories that don't contain sex.
Are you ever going to update your website?
The funny thing about being a history major is all the writing you have to do. I've had to write about 300 pages worth of papers over the last year-and-a-half. I finally have time and I'm making great work on getting the 'information' sections up and running. The site will be located here http://www.xenaonline.net.
Have you met any of the people from Xena?
Only at conventions. I've had some wonderful conversations with them in the past during the charity breakfast, the disco parties, and just in passing. They're just like fans. Only difference is, they have been on TV. They're all human. They require the same basic necessities to live, just like the rest of us.
Is there anyone Xena who you hate?
Um. Thinking... I can't think of a person I absolutely hate quite honestly. Since I don't know them personally, it's really hard for me to say: "I hate you" without sounding like an idiot. Unless of course you mean characters... and in that case... ALTI!
This ends this part of the questions. I'll sift through the emails, etc. to find more questions.

DVD re-releases of Xena and Hercules
The sets will retail for around $26.98, making it about $30 to $60 cheaper than the original re-releases.
A couple of notes about the audio and visual aspects. It appears, according to information from TV Shows on DVD that the video will be full screen with standard 2.0 audio.
If extras are not included, there is a reason for this. Davis-Panzer owns the bonus material that was included on the series releases. They filmed it, they included it on the sets before Anchor Bay distributed to stores nationwide.
Now, what does this mean by re-releasing the DVDs, probably nothing.
But BUY the sets. I'm being sincere. What better way to show interest in something that's been off the air than to clear the shelves of the sets from stores across the country.

Bitch Slap!
Before anyone goes: But, but you shouldn't judge it... know this: You don't know what I like to watch and vice versa!
Now, granted, I haven't see the film (nor care too) so it might be kind of judgmental of me to make that assumption that it is crappy and stupid. (Given the trailer, the producers haven't given me a reason to like it.)
However, having worked fourteen years in a video store and seeing thousands of movie trailers, I've gotten to be a good judge about movies. I can safely say, I've been more right than wrong about the "enjoyable" factor of a movie.
I know what my tastes are and what I like to watch. Bitch Slap isn't a movie I'd sit back on the recliner and watch much less go to a movie theater. (FYI: The same thing will go for Bedtime Stories at the end of the year.)
Now, obviously this movie gets some of the Xena and Hercules gang back together again for a brief moment in time. That's good from the outside looking in. But does that mean I have to subject myself to something I wouldn't normally watch if they weren't involved? No. It doesn't.
Will it help the movie? Probably not. Plenty of movies have star power only to fizzle in the box office. It's comes across as a more of a 'reunion' segment, sans the references to Xena and Hercules.
Should people be forced to watch it? No. Should they be allowed to bash the movie for being sleezy and slutty? Yeah. Should they be judged on that? NO!
It's an opinion. We're entitled to our opinions. And if we don't like someone's opinion, we deal with it in a respectable manner.
There is this expression:
What one man deems as art another deems as trash.
This applies to films. What one person may think is cool and funny, another thinks is trashy.
Titanic with Kate Winslet and Leonardo Di Caprio. I thought this was a good film. But I can name at least a dozen people who thought it was stupid from the trailer or after having watched it. Are they wrong because they haven't seen it? No. They know what they like to watch and the subject matter of the film simply doesn't appeal to them.
But just because we watch a trailer of a movie and get an opinin off of that, doesn't mean that we're being judgmental about the film itself. It means that we simply don't find the movie interesting or something we care to watch.

Xena's demise on Oxygen
In the past when they've ceased airing the episodes, it was normally to give the series a break. It generally takes about four and half months to run through the entire series. That means in a year, they can sometimes get the series in three times.
The information comes from a reliable source, confirmed by the fact that the recently revamped website no longer has a mention of the series or even a page. Confirmation of the news that the show may be off the network for good is out and should be known in a couple of days.
When the buyout by NBC Universal was announced earlier, the information released hinted NBC's desire to revamp the network with different content.

News from the Convention
Another interesting tidbit is that Renee's appearance on Army Wives will be a month or so long and that she'll play a character unlike what we've seen in the past and definitely not like what the fans are used to seeing. She'll be playing the agressor and will be in a position that some wish she would have been in while on Xena.
Lucy apparently hit a deer with her shiny Prius. Oops. Glad she's okay and the deer, according to her, was okay. She's got a "monster truck" loner. (Psst, Lucy. You're like all the rest of the Hollywood types. Let's hope your monster truck is fuel efficient.)
In probably what was the not so surprising moment from the convention... Liz Friedman was not disappointed that X and G never kissed. "I think we did what was right the for show," Friedman said.

Stop with the downloads of full episodes
Some people have told me I really need to stay out of what other people do. For most part, I’ll agree. And I don’t really meddle in other people’s business. I only concern myself when it might have some sort of affect on me.
Case in point: websites that knowingly post links to websites that provide downloads of music, movies and television shows. In most cases, doing such a thing is illegal and if anything, will get you into a world of hurt. And it’ll affect other webmasters of fan websites.
Over the last several months, there is not a day that goes by when I don’t get an “alert” announcing that a new episode is available for download. Are you kidding me? Are these people this brain dead to think that they won’t get caught?
Seriously folks, I know that at one time or another, we’ve all engaged in a little bit of mischief online. When you want that episode that you missed and it’s not offered online legally, you scour the Internet looking for such things.
The reality is nowadays that studios, music labels, networks and the like actively pursue those who “steal.” Call me an alarmist, I’m just looking out for you. Telling you: stay away from those websites that give you free music or movies. They’re evil, I tell you.
“But Jenn, you offer video clips on website,” says the peanut gallery. Yes, I do. And yes, that is wrong. However, the difference between what I do and what other folks do, is that I don’t post the full episode. I’m skirting the line, maybe even jumping over it, but I don’t jump into the abyss. I’m careful. And if they want me remove, I will. Though, I won’t be quit about it. But I’ll comply with the request.
So, how do you know the place you’re downloading from is legit? If it ain’t Netflix or Amazon (concerning Xena episodes) then it’s more than likely (more likely that not) illegal and you need to stay away.
And if you don’t have the DVDs? Check eBay or buy them Amazon.com. I realize that costs money. But it’s a cheaper alternative then having to pay a $5,000 fine and sitting in jail. The DVDs for Xena and Hercules are getting rarer and rarer to find because they’re out of print from Anchor Bay (er, Starz Home Entertainment). You better get them now while you can.
With the internet, most network websites now provide the episodes of your favorite shows free of charge for viewing or you can purchase them iTunes or Amazon’s Unbox for a cool $1.99. So it’s $2 and some change after tax. So what? At least your legal.
So my charge to you folks is that if you think it’s a cool idea to offer full episodes for free, you better think again. Big brother is watching you. And he will get you. Eventually.

Ash vs Xena or How much more can you destroy two classic franchises
The announcement (which they claimed was surprising) hardly blew me way. It was rumoured after the launch of the Xena comic books in 2006 that there might be a chance for a Ash/Xena crossover (which, ahem several fanboys and fangirls foamed at the mouth for).
Now, to each his on this, but personally the writers at Dynamite need to be spanked with a wet noodle and plastered with saran wrap for coming up with something so silly. It boggles the mind that some twit at Universal actually sold the license to those people.
Even Rob Tapert said that he's not happy with how they handled Xena. And Sam, Bruce and him aren't happy with how they've handled Ash and the Army of Darkness franchise.
I say to those us that care about good quality Xena stories that are original and don't rely on crossovers to write to Dynamite Entertainment and demand they sit down with fans and find out what works and what doesn't work.

More information on the Xena DVDs
This would most suredly piss fans off if Universal comes in and sweeps up the license only to re-issue the series with a whole new release. That's unlikely to happen.
Some history...
In November 2002, Davis Anderson released the first season onto DVD.
To get a better market for it, Davis Anderson entered into an agreement with Anchor Bay to distribute the DVDs to retailers. The sets were marketed in magazines, TV, Internet, grassroots marketing online and radio.
In January 2003, at the urging of Anchor Bay, Davis-Anderson filmed the "What you didn't know about Xena" for inclusion to the Best Buy sets for season 1.
Josh Becker was not pleased with the way these guys were filming. He actually directed his bit and then told Rob. According to Josh, Rob was livid that they didn't think of asking him, Lucy, Renee etc to do features.
The season two features were done hurry hurry.
For season three, things were running more smoothly at the urging of everyone involved to get more features--more of what the fans want. This included the involvement of Whoosh and the involvement of Sharon Delaney (more than likely at the request of Rob and company).
How much did they sell?
Rob elluded to an amount he was given by Davis Anderson during a Q & A on Talking Xena. In this, he states that only 225,000 units were sold and never available in retailers. Correction, the sets were available in retailers nationwide. From Best Buy to KMart to Costco to Wal*Mart, the sets were available during the intial month of release and in cases of Best Buy, for some time afterwards. So his statement is inaccurate in that they were never available at retailers.
Now, he could be referring to "not currently." As someone who works in retail, more specifically a videorentailer, I can tell you that for movies to go completely out of print is standard practice (in the previous post I referred to it as what Disney does). The problem here, is that Anchor Bay (Starz Home Entertainment) no longer is distributing the DVD. This closes the outlet for retailers such as Best Buy to sell the DVDs. For the record, the sets have been out of stores for well over a year now.
It is also common practice for stores to send back excess or stock that is no longer selling to their distributor (could be directly from Anchor Bar, Ingram, VPD or a number of second party distributors that retailers use) for credit.
Back to the 225,000 units sold. Counting the 10th Anniversary set, that's roughly 32,000 sets per season release. For a television released at the time, it was below the average (which was around 50,000 units for a TV show, if I recall). Some shows, such as Buffy and Family Guy generated millions of units sold during initial release.
Still, if you were to take the average retail value ($54.99 at the time) times the numbers sold totally it's a just tad under $12 million dollars.
Now, it could be that DA is lying and is fidging on the numbers. The fact is, Anchor Bay has a record of the number of units shipped and the number of units returned to them and subsequently sent back Davis Anderson.
Not getting their money
I say: sue 'em Rob. If anything, it'll expose what myself and others have said along about Davis-Anderson. I still laugh at the "we must sell our stock of swords because of the Xena movie..."

A clearing of the confusion over the Xena DVDs
In this thread on the TalkingXena board (and this is also in response to three emails I received recently), there is discussion about the Xena DVDs going out of print.
Starz Home Entertainment (formerly Anchor Bay Home Entertainment[ABHE]) no longer holds a distribution agreement to distribute both Hercules and Xena on DVD. In late 2002, Davis Anderson Merchandising (DAM) (the licensee to put both shows onto DVD) entered an agreement with ABHE to distribute the DVDs to retailers nationwide.
In the summer of 2002, Universal sold the DVD license to DAM to produce, market and package both shows on DVD. Universal has no involvement with the DVDs. DAM tried releasing the first season of Xena in November 2002. It did not sell well. This is when they entered into agreement ABHE to distribute the sets to retailers.
The Out-of-Print Status
"Out of print" basically means that it's no longer being manufactured. This is not uncommon. In fact, it's pretty common for studios and distributors to pull DVDs off the market for a period of five to ten years. Sometimes longer. Disney Home Video is known to release a DVD for a year and then put it in the vault for another seven.
No longer available then?
Well, it'll be available to purchase through third party sellers and the LegendaryHeroes.com website. (Keep in mind, DAM many have to produce the sets themselves. This translates to an extended waiting time to get the DVD sets.)
There is no change of licensing to my knowledge. It's possible that the license has run out with the DVDs for DAM. But I don't know about the license agreement.
I did a check of the release sheets and asked around, there is no future DVD releases of Xena in the next two years through a mass distributor (such as Starz Home Entertainment). If it were to be released, it'd be through DAM.
Hope this clears up any conclusions. As always, you can get a complete breakdown of the Xena DVDs here.

Xena Online Update and life in general
But oh well, it has to get done and I know what I'm doing this week.
Let's talk a little Xena...
I'm working on a project right now, that'll catapult the homebase into something really special. I'm shooting for a January 1, 2008 relaunch of the entire site with new features, plenty of information, and multimedai.
It'll be the "Xena" website for all-things "Xena." Read: Xena. No splintering off into other topics, genre and actresses. Nor will it focus on the actors new projects (that's what http://www.xwponline.net will be fore). It'll be a "Xena" websitein the most purest sense of the word.
What does that mean? Oh, I have my ideas what it will involve and will involve in the coming future. Thing of it as one huge website dedicated to soley to Xena (Hercules will come eventually) with nothing else in mind other than the fans.
Why I started doing this in the midst of transition from my retail job over to a job at the school newspaper, I don't know. Or why I started doing this midst of the school year with about three projects due in the next 3 weeks. Ouch.
Oh, I'm heading for some late nights. That's for sure. Just keep the coffee hot.

Xena Movie: Is it too late for Lucy and Renee? Is it too late for a Xena movie in general?
A subject recently came up on the XOC about the Xena Movie and whether or not it's too late for a movie.
The question is basic: is it too late for a movie. As of this posting, 61 people have participated. The "yes" and "no" category is tied with 24 votes each. The remaining 13 are undecided.
It's not about how old the actresses are, but about the timing of the movie (note: there is no word on whether or not there'll be a movie). It's too late, realistically speaking. The honeymoon is long over.
It has been over five years since the finale has aired. Many people who watched the show regularily have since moved on. Note, I determine "regularily" under the studio model of those that watched eight episodes or more a season. So, with that being said, the fandom is smaller than what it was during the series run.
Movies, like television, have a series of patterns it sees during the course of a few years. In the early 2000s, it would have been easy to get a genre piece action film made. 'Gladiator' was the catalyst in the genre that spawned dozens of like-minded films. But of those films, 'Gladiator' got the awards and the acclaim. The other films fell to the wayside, only to be discusse in times like this.
If this was six years ago and 'Xena' was still fresh in the minds of the studio and the actresses were interested, it might have been made or at least given a chance to get made. The reality is, is that neither actress was interested in returning to their roles. (After the negative feedback of wishing their careers to be sacrificed for upsetting the fandom, can you really blame them??)
The movie could have catapulted on the success of 'Gladiator.' But the time of epic sword-and-sandle films are gone. The last few struggled to capture an audience. Even with the success of '300' (which was not that great of a movie), there are others that have failed in the past two years.
The time for 'Xena', has come and gone. One can only hope that the need for a female action series will return and hopefully it'll be as groundbreaking as 'Xena.'
The otherside (rather, the hidden meaning) to the poll is that are Lucy and Renee too old to reprise their roles? Not yet. But it's impossible to determine when is it they'll be too old to reprise the roles. Lucy has often said she invisioned herself playing Xena's mother.
Fans should be greatful for what they have. One of the reasons why George Lucas has never made any post-Jedi films, is because of all the books that have been written. There's tons of fan fiction out there for 'Xena' fans to read to "fill the void" no movie.

Online petitions aren't worth the server space they take up
So, what do you do? Well, you get PEOPLE who are being directly impacted by something to send a letter. The letter says that you cared enough to write in and say hey: stop it, help out, do something, take action.
You want something done? Write a letter. Send an email. They don't care about online petitions.
Just take a look at the numerous Xena movie petitions out there. Has it helped it any??? The answer is NO. It hasn't.
